Mason-Dixon GSP ClubTraining Day ReportTraining Day CoordinatorJohn Warren (301) 349-4846jwarren1024@aol.com Fall Training Day 9-19-10 The Training Day this year is scheduled for Sunday, September 19,2010 and will begin with registration at 7:30 am. As in past years there will be a brief demonstration on dog handling and required performance for each of the AKC hunt test levels. This may be your first opportunity to get your dog “on birds” before the Fall hunt test season. There will be experienced dog handlers to work with you and your dog on hunt test requirements. Looking forward to seeing you. John Warren
4-10 We held this Spring’s Training Day at Lake Sycamore Landing. Rain was falling, mud and water were everywhere you walked, and the creek was within 50 feet of the pavilion, and oh, by the way, the event was a huge success. There were over 25 people in attendance, and 20 dogs were involved in some type of training.John Naughton and Shadow provided the crowd with excellent bird finding and pointing demonstrations. Jim Birdsall worked with individual dogs and owners and provided great tips on how to get your dog to steady up on a bird. This was a really great show for those of us waiting our turn in the field. Lannie Seymour had a couple of launchers which he used to keep the birds out of the water and dry so they could fly. Some of the more experienced dogs worked with John Naughton and Julie Birdsall on Chukars while Pat Dady was gunning to get ready for the Senior Tests. Parry Tomlin stayed out in the rain to plant dry birds so everyone had a “flyer.” Dennis Brekhus worked tirelessly with puppies and handlers to introduce them to birds. Big thanks to Mike Thompson for picking up the birds in Pennsylvania and delivering them to us and staying around to watch the show. And a special thank you to everyone for making it a great day. See you in the Fall. The Club’s Fall Training Day was held on Sunday, September 13 at McKee-Bescher’s Sycamore Landing site. The day was sunny and hot, not as hot as last year, but hot enough to keep dogs and handlers running for more water. Over 30 people and their dogs were on hand for an opportunity to point some birds and to get some pointers on the upcoming Hunt Test season. The club’s members provided expert advice and demonstrations on how to train your dog for the hunt test level (Junior, Senior, and Master) that you will be competing in. It was also an occasion to have fun and to socialize with people who have dogs and enjoy the sport as much as you do. There was coffee to sip and doughnuts to munch while you watched. Thanks to John Naughton and Shadow for demonstrating the proper Junior level handling and to Brian Kohr and Duke for helping in the Senior/Master demonstration. Jim Birdsall gave a great talk and demonstration on training your dog to honor with just a silhouette and a bird launcher. Also a special thanks to Jim Felter for helping Junior handlers “find the bird” and “point the bird.” Carroll Waltemeyer was there as always to shoot the birds that Julie Birdsall planted. We had a new gunner this year, Herb Brown, who did a commendable job on his first time out. A special thanks to Ginny Alexander for supporting our event by bringing a delightful spread of goodies and drinks to share with us .Dennis Brekhus had his pen set up for Novice Dogs but I’m not sure how many people really considered their dog a “Novice.” See you in March for the Spring Training Day.
