Mason-Dixon GSP Club’s Walking Field Trial - March 27-28, 2010

Walking Field Trial Chairperson, Pat Dady, 301-948-2471pat@patdady.com

Mason-Dixon GSPC’s Walking Field Trial has “come of age”!!!    Entries came fast and furious, spurred on by many other clubs’ trial cancellations up and down the East Coast, as they found their grounds either under water or too wet to use.

A total of 107 entries, forced closing our entries early to insure we had enough daylight to run all the dogs during the two day event.  People came with their dogs from as far away as Massachusetts, Connecticut and Ohio.  “Smokin’ Ray” and his wife, Jeanne, were there providing their delious breakfast, BBQ ribs, chicken, etc…….no one went hunger.

Several members’ dogs placed in the stakes.……. Dick Cullerton and Dennis Brekhus to name two.   Just goes to confirm, that we need to “trust of dogs”, whether we know “what’s happening” or not……right Dick?!

After a 3 year hiatus, during which there was no walking trial, in 2007 we started again slowly with a one day, 3 stake event and drew 27 entries.  Jim and Julie Birdsall then took charge and nurtured it over the next 2 years, building enthusiasm and awareness of the event, both within our membership and the Mid-Atlantic pointing dog community at large.   From discussions, this year’s event was the largest Mason-Dixon GSP Trial in memory……..

A memorial trophy, the first in the Walking Trial’s history, was presented by Carroll Waltemyer to the 1st place winner of the Open Gun Dog stake in honor of his departed wife, Shirley.  The trophy will be returned next year and passed to the next winner of Open Gun Dog in perpetuity.

Many thanks to all the Club members who came to help make the trial such a huge success!  Its only thru the collective efforts of many members, that our Club can successfully sponsor events like this.  For fear of forgetting someone, I won’t attempt to name all the individuals…….. but a special thanks to all the judges, and……John Naughton & Rob Loew for being there to do whatever needed to happen (especially in moving the port-a-john, which was mistakenly delivered a mile away from our grounds), Parry Tomlin for being chief scribe, bird planter and “Man Friday”, Jim & Julie Birdsall for helping with their knowledge and expertise in so many areas, Bob Priest for getting handlers with their dogs to the breakway on time, Hunter Shelley and all the others for planting birds on the two courses.…..THANKS TO ALL!

Hunting Quarter Road Dog Training Grounds (McKee Beesers WMA).  Please come to have fun with your dog and learn what a pointing dog field trial is all about, without having to deal with horses.  A short orientation will be held on March 14th, at MDGSPC Training Day, two weeks before the event.

A Field Trial differs from a Hunt Test in that the dogs are competing against each other for placement (1st thru 4th), rather than being compared to a written standard (pass or fail).  In a Walking Trial, handlers are on foot (rather than horse back) and handle their dog thru a defined course in much the same way a handler highlights his dog's ability in a Hunt Test.

Field Trial events evaluate dogs of similar age and/or ability against each other.  "Puppy" is for dogs under 16 months of age.  "Derby" is for dogs under 24 months of age.  Entries in "Puppy" and 'Derby" are judged by similar criteria as dogs entered in "Junior" at a Hunt Test....or North American Hunting Dog Association's (NAVHDA) "Natural Ability".  "Gun Dog" entries are more mature "polished" dogs and are compared against each other as to bird finding, steadiness and honoring a brace mate's point.  A "Gun Dog" that breaks point or does not honor a brace mate's point is immediately disqualified.

Premiums will be sent to MDGSPC member's about March 1st and will be available at the March 14th Training Day.  Also you can look under www.akc.org and search under events.
