Rescue Report for 2009 During 2009 we have supported Mid-Atlantic GSP Rescue through direct donations of cash ($185), calendar sales of 6 so far, and being foster homes, transports and volunteers. The club has 5 members involved as volunteers or fosters. The total for 2009 is not yet complete, but so far 78 dogs have been re-homed with 14 remaining in foster care. The outlook for 2010 is not much better. Dogs will be found as strays or owner turn ins because of the economy. Dogs being abused, not fed or under fed, and dogs without vaccinations are high on Rescue’s potential list. Goals for 2010: 6 Club Foster homes 20 micro-chips Donations- $500.00
12/09 Rescue sells calendars of GSP Rescued Dogs 'living the new life' as a means to fund the health and careof dogs being rescued and re-homed. The Calendars make great holiday gifts for your GSP friends. The cost is $15 and can be obtained from MDGSPRESCUE.ORG or by calling Rob Loew 301-972-0868.The economy has not helped the Rescue situation. More and more people are turning in dogs that they can no longer support. Adoptions are not increasing and thus more dogs are being fostered looking for that forever home.RESCUE needs more people to become foster homes! This last week we were beating the bushes looking for fosters for 6 puppies, (no, only one at a time). If you know someone who would like to do a 'GSP Trial' maybe they are a foster candidate, have them contact Rob at 301-972-0868.November, year to date, we have re-homed 83 dogs with 15 in foster and the six puppies arriving 11/22. Love and Honor this great breed. Rescue normally asks for your support for the clubs efforts to support the rescue cause. We support Mid - Atlantic GSP Rescue as part of our charter with GSPCA to promote the breed. Mid - Club members that are registered with Mid – Atlantic GSP Rescue, as fosters or volunteers, are: Pat Dady Rob Loew Parry Tomlin Hunter Shelly Carol White Faith Fields The Club has a Rescue account as part of the club treasury. Money from sales of rescue items, (collars, shirts, dog toys, and Micro - chipping go to this account). Cash contributions go directly to Mid – Boarding for Rescue Donation. We have members who will board your dog for short periods in exchange for your donation to Mid – Atlantic which is tax deductible, everyone wins. Contact Rob Loew for information about rescue or boarding services: r.loew@comcast.net or 301-972 -0868 Rescue and the Club get many requests about breeding, breeders, pedigrees, and in general what to look for when purchasing a dog. The following makes a point to support our breed: Rescue Statements in Response to the Following Questions: “Can I Get A Rescue Dog To Breed?” We do not adopt out intact animals. All rescues are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Most are in rescue because the people who “just wanted a puppy from their own dog” weren’t responsible, and didn’t make provisions to care for any and all puppies they produced throughout their lifetimes if their new owners could not. Has Your Male Dog Been: X-Rayed For Hip Dysplasia? Examined By A Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist For Hereditary Eye Diseases? Had A Cardiac Ultrasound To Check For Hereditary Heart Disease? If not, then he shouldn’t be bred. Being smart is not the only qualification a dog needs in order to be breeding material. If your dog came from a responsible breeder, they would have educated you and potentially required that you have him neutered. All of that being set aside, you are MUCH more likely to get a dog like the one you have now by going back to the person that you got him from and getting a related dog than you are breeding him to any random female that has a uterus. Dogs that are the products of out crossing (breeding dogs that are completely unrelated through many generations) are more likely to be more different from the parents than they are similar to them. Dog breeding carries a big responsibility. If you aren’t willing to be responsible for each and every puppy that your dog has half responsibility for producing, then rethink the breeding thing, neuter Smokey and get a puppy. Check around on Petfinder and see how many homeless GSPs there are already out there. Please don’t produce more. Beth Cochran, DVM, Rescue tries to save and re – home all GSP’s found or turned in. The reality is that Rescue does not have enough fosters to house the dogs until adoption. Some dogs come with medical problems or behavioral issues that Rescue cannot afford or handle. A decision to put down a dog is hard. A dog coming into Rescue that is HW + in addition to the normal Vetting and spay or neuter requires the HW treatment, a 60% chance of recovery and adoptability, at a cost of $400 plus 6 weeks of lead walking and crating. If adopted the requested donation is $250-300 depending on age. Rescue, (Mid – Atlantic contributions are tax deductible) always can use money. More important Mid - Rescue GSP’s can be registered with the AKC as IPL (indefinite provisional license) and can compete in all but Conformation and Field Trials for titles. Membership in the club asks that you support the breed. Are you doing your part? |
